Just received and reviewed this deck. I love it! I'm am an adult and bought it for my own personal use. This deck is perfect for beginners, children or for people who need modifications.

I currently take an in-studio yoga class (which is catered towards the less flexible due to injury or size) and these cards are like the class in a box, as if the creator took my instructor and boxed her up. Perfect!

Please don't dismiss this as strictly a children's product due to the drawings. I actually find the drawings to be cute and helpful. Each card offers step by step instructions for properly getting into each pose, including breathing (which is extremely important in yoga), modifications as well as letting the user know which areas are being targeted, which is also helpful for knowing if you're doing it properly.

This is not a set for the hardcore yogini, but great for anyone starting out, inflexible or with children. I highly recommend it and plan on telling my classmates about it tonight!

Might even buy another set for my sister-in-law who has never done yoga but is interested on learning...and she can do it with my nephew!

Yoga for Small Spaces Christine Ristuccia Lynn Geddes Say It Right Charles Beyl 9781934701126 Books Reviews

NOTE I received a free copy of this deck for review from the publicist.

The box describes Yoga for Small Spaces, a 52-Card Yoga Deck, as "Standing, Sitting & Chair Yoga for Offices * Schools * Planes." Although the set would definitely work for all of those situations, once you open the box, the cute illustrations and simple descriptions will immediately make you think that these cards are for children. This is not surprising, as the included 8-page instructional fold-out explains that the deck was originally created for classroom use, with the main advantage being that no equipment is needed.

The authors of this deck are Christine Ristuccia and Lynn Geddes, both Registered Yoga Teachers; Ristuccia is also a pediatric speech language therapist. In their instructional handout, they discuss how to use the cards. Each 5"x7" card has a full-color illustration of the yoga pose on one side, and on the reverse, it offers the key element of the posture, detailed setup cues, benefits of the pose, possible modifications, and an affirmation to go along with that pose. In addition, the cards are organized by several different methods to assist with the selection of poses. First, each card has a colored border, with the six different colors pertaining to how that posture group can support well-being--for example, orange poses stimulate creativity. Second, each card is marked with one or more small icons representing whether that pose is a warm-up, basic level, resting pose, energizing pose, or intermediate. The remainder of the fold-out covers breathing, alignment, and basic postural instructions.

The postures themselves offer a nice variety. Some are the most basic, foundational poses of yoga, such as Mountain and Chair Lunge, whereas some offer a slightly greater challenge, including King Dancer and Tree. The deck also includes more meditative and breathing exercises, from "Brain and Temple Massage" to simple "Inhale * Exhale." I also noticed the influence of Kundalini Yoga in some of the more active postures, including "Washing Machine" and "Washing Windows." (As you may notice, many of the posture designations used are not the traditional asana terms but rather names that would be catchier to a child audience.) The one issue I had with the cards is that I wish that the posture name had been printed on the front side (i.e., the side with the picture of the pose) as well as on the reverse.

Some adults may be put off by the juvenile nature of the drawings (which all feature children), but the yoga postures included clearly would be appropriate for virtually anyone facing space and equipment constraints. However, I definitely do think that this yoga deck would be most appropriate for using with children, either in the classroom setting or for parents who are wanting to teach their kids yoga (the latter group might also want to consider Learn With Yoga ABC Yoga Cards for Kids (Yoga Cards), another yoga deck by author Ristuccia which offers many of the exact same illustrations as this one, but which organizes the postures by letters of the alphabet instead). Yet as mentioned, I also think that this deck could have some utility with adults. In fact, I am a psychologist who works with college students, and I plan to use cards from this deck as simple homework assignments to give my student clients. For the uses as described above, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this set.
Fantastic deck of cards I highly recommend it - not just for small spaces either. The info on the cards is really helpful in so many ways -) exceeded my expectations - I love it !!!
